NLP is concerned with learning from what we observe and basing our actions and behaviours on these observations.
Within the concept of NLP, learning is regarded as an exciting activity.
Learning
• Stimulates your mind
• Gives you options
• Increases your choices
• Improves your quality of life
• Keeps your mind youthful
• Expands your mind
NLP emphasises inductive learning that is, learning from your own experiences through your own unique, individual way.
Every time you feel you have made a ‘mistake’, you have actually simply giving yourself some feedback about how NOT to do something again.
With NLP, everything is experiential learning to achieve an outcome of excellence.
The underlying premise of NLP is doing everything with an attitude on excellence.
Most people are unaware of areas they excel in until someone points these out to them.
There are 4 Learning Levels.
I. Unconscious Incompetence
This Learning Level refers to the condition that we do not know what we do not know.
II. Conscious Incompetence
At this point, we are incompetent, and we know it.
III. We now move to the level of having acquired competence and knowledge and this is called Conscious Competence.
There is still a certain amount of effort involved in applying this knowledge and competency.
IV. The level that we would like to achieve for everything we do and know is Unconscious Competence.
This means that, you know processes and knowledge so well that you can intuitively action them.
You are no longer consciously aware of the step by step procedures as you put these competencies into practice.
This is evidenced when you do something and someone asks you how you did it, and you reply, “I don’t know. I just did it.”
On a conscious level, we can only think of one relatively complex thing at a time, although we can juggle 5 or 6 less complex ones, but not in any depth.
This is why we can do several routine things at one time, because some of the activities will be on autopilot.
For example
You can complete the multi-tasks of getting dressed, which you do subconsciously (autopilot), while you converse with someone, and sip coffee (again, an autopilot activity).
If you do an action or behaviour often enough that is, practise excellence, you can get everything you do to this Unconscious Competence level.
Remember: Nearly everything you now do very well, you once did badly.
You practised with intentions of excellence and repeated and repeated and repeated these practices until you now operate from a position of Unconscious Competence.
This kind of learning makes use of the whole brain, the left and right hemispheres.
Learning and unlearning go hand in hand. This is then followed by relearning.
The fundamental principles of NLP are concerned with your thinking, behaviours and the learnings you get from ALL your experiences so that you live your life optimally.
